The Faculty of Science and Natural Resources at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently hosted the second University-Industry Research Consortium (UIRC) Roadshow, aimed at strengthening academic-industry collaboration and promoting research in the limestone karst field. The event saw active participation from geology students and lecturers.

Led by Professor Emeritus Dato' Dr Ibrahim Komoo, UIRC Director, the roadshow introduced the scholarship opportunities available under the UIRC and the Young Researchers Industrial Grant, offering a platform for aspiring researchers to catalyse their research. The roadshow also aimed to raise awareness about geoarchaeology in Sabah, a field with immense potential for uncovering the region's geological and archaeological heritage.

A highlight of the event was a lecture titled 'Geoarchaeology in Sabah,' delivered by Professor Dato' Dr. Mokhtar Saidin, an archaeology expert, Chairperson of the National Geopark Executive Committee, and one of the three subject matter experts in the UIRC Scientific Committee. The lecture provided UMS students with valuable insights into the opportunities in geoarchaeology studies in Sabah.

The event at UMS follows the first UIRC roadshow held at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan last month. Launched by YTL Cement and the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) in October 2023, the UIRC is a landmark partnership between universities and industries. The UIRC was established to study tropical limestone karst landscapes in the country, contributing to Malaysia's pursuit of sustainable development.
