A group of 35 architects and sustainability practitioners had the exclusive opportunity to experience firsthand the practical integration of sustainable design elements during a seminar and building tour at the Tzu Chi International School.

The seminar was organised by Malaysia Green Building Council (MGBC) and included a talk by Ar. Michael Ching, Director of BGreen Associates Sdn Bhd who was the green consultant involved during the construction of the school. During his talk, he spoke about the green design elements and award-winning features of the school, highlighting how they harmoniously combine functionality with environmental consciousness.

Being a GBI Silver-rated building and the winner of the ASEAN Energy Award in 2023, Ar. Michael shared that the school incorporates a diverse range of sustainable design features, with the primary emphasis on passive design. These are design techniques used in architecture to harness natural elements such as sunlight, wind, and shade, to create comfortable and energy-efficient living or working spaces.

His talk was followed by an insightful session from Ms. Clarisse Loh, Head of Sustainability at YTL Cement, who discussed the role of concrete in sustainable architecture and how its characteristics contribute to a quality living environment.
