The Langkawi Plant team and The Penang Port Commission (PPC) jointly organised the Program Penghijauan Sempena Hari Alam Sekitar Negara 2024 recently.

Kedah Cement Jetty Sdn Bhd in Langkawi hosted the event, with support from the Forestry Department of Kedah, showcasing collaborative efforts in environmental stewardship and community engagement.

The Langkawi team spent two months meticulously preparing for the event, to ensure it embodied sustainable practices at every step. In early August 2024, the team conducted a site assessment with a Kedah Forestry Officer to confirm land suitability and determine tree types and quantities. Site preparations included digging 40 holes and using repurposed conveyor belts as planting “pots.” This involved preparing a specialised soil mix to enhance the trees' durability and promote long-term growth, ensuring they thrive and remain resilient over time. The trees will receive six months of intensive care, including close supervision and an automated watering system.

The programme featured the planting of 40 Merawan Siput Jantan trees within the Kedah Cement Jetty premises, with 700 forest trees donated by the Kedah Forestry Department to bolster greening efforts. These initiatives enhance biodiversity and foster a greener, healthier environment on the island.

The event was officially launched by Tuan Jeffrey Chew Gim Eam, Chairman of PPC, who emphasised the value of partnerships between local authorities, private companies, and community members. Attendees included representatives from DOE Kedah, Kedah Forestry Department, JKR Kedah, Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), SK Ewa and SK Penghulu Ahmad, the Langkawi Police Station, Petronas, and Masjid Ewa before totaling around 100 participants.

The event reflects the sustainability and community pillars of BUILDS, showcasing YTL Cement's dedication to eco-conscious practices and meaningful community outreach. Through these collaborative efforts, YTL Cement and its partners are paving the way for environmental preservation and community-centered development across Malaysia.
